Source of lead
Lead is naturally present in the soil and is extracted for use in the manufacture of batteries, ceramics, paints and many other products, such as shotgun pellets. In Europe alone, they are responsible for the release of 21,000 tonnes of lead into the natural environment, which ends up in the soil and waterways. Along with cadmium and mercury, it is one of three heavy metals subject to special monitoring due to the risks it poses to human health.
Lead treatment
Wastewater treatment plants effectively remove lead from raw water through the clarification stage. However, pollution persists in drinking water, largely due to existing pipes, whether public or private.
Health risks
The risk mainly affects children, although regular exposure to lead can also be harmful to adults. Long-term exposure is the greatest danger. Lead is toxic and can cause temporary disorders such as anaemia and digestive problems, as well as irreversible disorders such as damage to the nervous system. It is also classified as a probable carcinogen in its inorganic form.
Regulations
European Directive 98/83 of 3 November 1998 set the maximum lead content in tap water at 10 micrograms per litre (µg/L) from 25 December 2013.
