Choosing the right water filter

A gravity-fed water filter has many advantages over other water filtration systems. If you're still not sure what this process involves, you can take a look at our explanations of gravity-fed water filtration systems.

And if you haven't yet decided on a brand or model, you can find information to help you make the right choice on our page explaining the differences between gravity filter brands.

The Star Water Filter® range

The Star Water Filter® range comprises three models, each with a different volume. Each model is made from AISI 304 stainless steel and comes in three different finishes. The first is shiny stainless steel, the second is matt creamy white lacquered, and the last is matt black lacquered. Volumes are 5.6 litres (Mini Star), 8.5 litres (Big Star) and 12.3 litres (Super Star). All are fitted with 2 Ultimate Star Filters®. The 8 and 12 litre models can accommodate 4 filters.

How to choose your Star Water Filter® model

A gravity-fed water filter should give you access to enough filtered water to last a day or so. This is because filtered water, freed of its pollutants and therefore the chlorine it contained, does not keep as long as treated water. This water must be consumed within 3 days, or 48 hours in very hot weather. In this context, you need to assess your daily consumption, and choose a model that meets this need. Another reason is that, to work properly, the filters need to be used at least every 2 days. This means that the upper tank must be completely filled at least every 2 days. To avoid an overflow between the two tanks, make sure that the lower tank is completely empty before filling the system.

If you overestimate the capacity of the filter, you run the risk of not using the water within the appropriate timeframe and not putting enough strain on the filters.

If you underestimate the filter's capacity, you'll have to refill it more than once a day, which isn't very serious, as filtration is relatively fast.

You should therefore try to estimate your daily requirements as accurately as possible in order to choose the right model.

How do you estimate your daily drinking water requirements?

This will depend on a number of factors:

  • Consumption habits: are you a heavy water drinker or not?
  • The number of occupants: water consumption is obviously proportional to the number of people involved.
  • Your use of water, apart from cold drinks: filtered water is used for drinking, but also for preparing hot drinks (tea, coffee, herbal teas, etc.), cooking (rice, pasta, vegetables, baking, steaming, etc.) and for culinary preparations (soups). Boiling water in no way removes pollutants from the water.

Once you know how much water you consume each day, you can choose the model that suits you best. Bear in mind that it's better to choose a model whose volume is slightly less than your estimated consumption, rather than one whose volume is clearly greater than your needs. In the first case, you'll simply have several refill routines during the day. In the second case, you run the risk of stagnating the water and not putting enough strain on your filters.

Here's a table summarising the characteristics of our models and suggesting a number of people consistent with its useful volume:

Optional accessories

Our accessories are all made from AISI 304 stainless steel, but are available in three finishes: bright stainless steel, matt black stainless steel or creamy white stainless steel.

All our models come with a stainless steel tap as standard, finished to match the finish of the system you have chosen.

As an option, you can choose to replace the standard stainless steel tap with a stainless steel level tap (colour-matched), which shows the level of filtered water in the lower tank.

We also offer risers to raise the system. This option is useful when the water filter is not positioned on the edge of a piece of furniture or worktop.
