For several days now, France and much of Europe have been experiencing an intense heatwave, with temperatures regularly exceeding 35°C. These heatwaves, which are becoming increasingly frequent and prolonged, are putting our bodies under severe strain. In these extreme conditions, staying well hydrated is vital for maintaining physiological functions and avoiding serious complications such as heatstroke or severe dehydration.

Drinking water is the first line of defence against the heat. However, many people forget that the quality of the water we consume is just as important as the quantity. As temperatures rise, water consumption increases, so it is essential to ensure that it is free of pollutants and various residues.

Why is water essential?

As the body's most abundant component, water accounts for approximately 60–70% of our body weight.
It is essential for many vital functions such as biochemical reactions, blood circulation, temperature regulation, digestion, nutrient transport, joint lubrication, etc.

Water is continuously eliminated from the body as we lose water through breathing, sweating, and urinating. To compensate, we need to drink at least 1.5 to 2 litres of water per day.
During heat waves or when exercising, these requirements may increase. For example, intense exercise can cause up to 1 litre of water to evaporate through perspiration in an hour.
To stay fit and avoid dehydration, it is therefore important to compensate for these losses by drinking frequently.

Certain groups need to be particularly vigilant. Older people (who have a lower body water content), children, pregnant women and athletes are more susceptible to dehydration. It is crucial for them to drink even more regularly, even if they are not thirsty, to help the body maintain its temperature and function properly.

Heat waves and health: risks and best practices

During a heat wave, the body has difficulty regulating its temperature. Without sufficient water intake, dehydration sets in quickly. The warning signs are typical: intense thirst, headaches, fatigue, muscle cramps, dizziness, and even nausea and vomiting.

Without adequate hydration, the risk of heatstroke increases, with consequences that can lead to hospitalisation. At the end of June 2025, there was a marked increase in emergency consultations for hyperthermia and dehydration across all age groups.

In view of these risks, simple everyday precautions should be taken, particularly with regard to water:

  • Drink frequently, without waiting until you feel thirsty. As the health authorities remind us, it is essential to drink water regularly without waiting until you feel thirsty. In practice, this means taking small sips of water several times an hour. Drinking too cold is not recommended; opt for water at room temperature or slightly cool.
  • Choose pure water. Water remains the best drink during heat waves. Unlike sugary, fizzy or alcoholic drinks, it hydrates without causing diuresis or adding unnecessary calories.
  • Fruit juices, teas and soft drinks (especially iced or sweetened) can actually accelerate dehydration. Alcohol should be avoided during hot weather as it greatly increases dehydration.
  • Hydrate in ways other than drinking. During heat waves, it is also important to cool the body by taking cool showers, wetting the face and forearms, or using a fan. Although this is not a substitute for drinking water, it helps regulate temperature and conserve internal water reserves. In any case, internal hydration with water remains essential.

Stay hydrated with Star Water Filter® filters

Beyond the quantity of water, the quality of water is also important for effective hydration. Clean, tasteless water encourages you to drink more. That's where our Star Water Filter® filtration systems come in.

Our Ultimate Star Filter® filters incorporate several advanced technologies to purify tap water using multiple layers of high-quality activated carbon, a nanofiltration membrane and a special material designed to capture heavy metals.

This combination effectively removes a wide range of pollutants (chlorine, heavy metals, PFAS, viruses, bacteria, drug residues, microplastics, etc.) while retaining beneficial minerals (calcium, magnesium).

In short, you get filtered water of optimal purity without sacrificing its mineral balance, which is essential for your health.

The advantages of our systems are numerous. They are available in different capacities (5.6 L, 8.5 L and 12.3 L) to suit the needs of a single person or a family.

In practice, here are a few tips for staying well hydrated with our Star Water Filter® systems:

  • Fill your water filter in the morning so that it doesn't get too warm, and start your day by drinking a large glass of filtered water.
  • Drink in small, regular sips and don't just drink a large amount of water once a day. Get into the habit of drinking several sips every hour, even if you're not thirsty. This compensates for water loss due to heat and stabilises your body temperature.
  • Choose filtered water over soft drinks and alcohol. This maximises your hydration and prevents you from depleting your mineral reserves.
  • Collect your filtered water in a glass jug and put it in the fridge if you prefer to have cool water available.

Filtered water, your health ally during heat waves

During heat waves, drinking enough water is vital. But it is just as important to ensure the quality of the water you drink. With a filtration solution such as Star Water Filter®, you are guaranteed pure, healthy, great-tasting water that is always available, even in hot weather.

By adopting these simple habits—drinking regularly, eating foods rich in water, and equipping yourself with an effective filtration system—you can protect your health and that of your loved ones while respecting the environment.

Take care of yourself and stay hydrated the smart way!
