Pesticides: a heavy legacy of modern agriculture
Pesticides and herbicides are now ubiquitous in our environment.
They mainly come from conventional agriculture, which spreads colossal quantities of them every year: nearly 360,000 tonnes are purchased annually in the European Union.
However, only a fraction of the pesticides applied actually reach the targeted plants. The rest — between 30% and 50% — disperses into the soil and water. Through runoff, infiltration or evaporation, these molecules then end up in rivers, groundwater and, ultimately, tap water.
A worrying situation in Europe
According to a recent report by the European Environment Agency (EEA), only 37% of surface waters are considered to be in good or very good ecological health.
And the situation is even more worrying in terms of chemicals: only 29% of surface waters meet quality criteria.

In May 2024, the newspaper Le Monde (read the article) revealed that 97% of French groundwater contains traces of pesticides or their metabolites (degradation products).
Worse still, 20% of aquifers exceed regulatory quality thresholds.
And this situation is not limited to France: analyses carried out in Germany, Belgium, Spain and the Netherlands have come to the same conclusion. Pesticides, although sometimes banned for years, persist and transform into secondary molecules that are just as problematic.
‘Invisible’ substances: the case of TFA and PFAS
In October 2024, the association Générations Futures sounded the alarm by identifying dozens of dangerous pesticide metabolites that were not monitored by the authorities.
These substances are not tested for in groundwater or tap water, even though they can have toxic effects in the long term.
Among them is TFA (trifluoroacetic acid), a compound belonging to the PFAS family — often referred to as ‘forever chemicals’ because of their extreme persistence in the environment.
TFA comes from the degradation of a herbicide that is still authorised in Europe, and is now found in the water that many people consume every day.
PFAS are known to accumulate in organisms and be linked to many harmful effects: hormonal disorders, weakened immune systems, reduced fertility and increased risks of certain chronic diseases.
