A gravity filter, as the name suggests, is a filter that uses gravity to ‘push’ the water through the filter media.

There are a number of advantages to this filtration principle: apart from its ease of use and maintenance, its main advantage is that the system is completely autonomous. You don't need electricity or water pressure to operate. All you have to do is fill the upper tank, and the water flows through the filter into the lower tank without any external action. This ensures ease of use and maintenance, and complete autonomy, even when you don't have access to a power source or mains water. So it's perfectly usable, even in an emergency.

Another advantage is that the low flow rate of this filter means that the water (and its pollutants) are in prolonged contact with the different layers of the filter, resulting in enhanced efficiency.
