How can chlordecone be removed from drinking water?
📰 Discover how chlordecone, a persistent and toxic pesticide, contaminates our water and how Star Water Filter® gravity water filters provide effective protection against it.
- Persistent pollutant (250–650 years)
- High contamination in the West Indies
- Risks: cancer, hormonal disorders
- Coconut activated carbon: the most effective solution
- Ultimate Star Filter®: >99.9% proven removal rate
Chlordecone is one of the most persistent and worrying pollutants ever released into the environment. Its presence in water, soil and the food chain makes it a major health issue, particularly in overseas territories. Discover how Ultimate Water Filter® gravity water filters offer an effective and sustainable solution to drastically reduce your exposure to this invisible contaminant.
A formidable and persistent pollutant
Chlordecone is an extremely stable and toxic organochlorine insecticide. Its chemical structure makes it a virtually indestructible substance: it can persist in the environment for between 250 and 650 years. In other words, areas that are contaminated today will remain so for several centuries if nothing is done.
Widespread use and lasting consequences
Used since the 1970s to combat the banana weevil, chlordecone has also been used on other crops (tobacco, citrus fruits, vegetables, flowers). Although its use was banned in 1993 in the French West Indies, its effects continue to be felt. It is estimated that over 90% of agricultural land in Guadeloupe and Martinique is now contaminated, as are a large part of the rivers and coastline.
Due to its partial solubility, chlordecone has seeped into groundwater and tap water. It also accumulates in marine fauna and flora, contaminating fish, crustaceans and shellfish, as well as certain plant products. This contamination is silent but widespread.
A major health hazard
Classified as an endocrine disruptor, neurotoxin and carcinogen, chlordecone is effective even in very small doses. It alters the hormonal system, affects fertility and increases the risk of prostate cancer. According to Santé publique France, between 90% and 95% of Guadeloupe's inhabitants have measurable traces of chlordecone in their bodies. Contamination now extends beyond the Caribbean: traces have been detected on corals in French Polynesia, proof of its global spread.
Why coconut activated carbon is the best solution
Studies have shown that filters based on activated carbon from coconut shells are the most effective at removing chlordecone and other organochlorine compounds. Thanks to its microporous structure, this material offers exceptional adsorption capacity, effectively trapping pollutant molecules while preserving essential minerals in the water. Star Water Filter® technology: comprehensive, certified filtration
Star Water Filter® gravity water filtration systems use an exclusive blend of high-quality activated carbons, combined with other innovative filter media (nanofiltration membrane, heavy metal removal media, colloidal silver, etc.). This unique design retains a wide range of chemical and microbiological pollutants with great efficiency: pesticides, herbicides, PFAS, heavy metals, bacteria, viruses and, of course, chlordecone with an elimination rate of over 99.9%.
Taking action for your health and that of your family
Given the persistence of chlordecone in the environment, it is essential to take preventive measures. Filtering your water with a reliable system is currently the simplest and most immediate way to reduce your daily exposure to this invisible pollutant.
With Star Water Filter®, you can choose healthy, safe and pleasant-tasting water, while contributing to an environmentally responsible approach.
