The facts

Water pollution is evident today, wherever you are in the world. Natural causes, but above all human activity, contribute to the contamination of the most essential resource for life. The chemical industry, conventional agriculture and transport are all factors that endanger water quality.

The limits of sanitation

In countries with sanitation systems, raw water is collected and sent to treatment plants. It undergoes various treatments to remove pollutants and reduce contaminants. This allows the water to meet the pollution thresholds set by water agencies and be declared safe to drink. But is this enough?

Even if this process is effective, it often does not take into account emerging pollutants, which are discovered over time and prove to be dangerous to human health years after their appearance. There are also technical limitations to sanitation that do not allow all molecules present in water today to be treated. Finally, there is an economic limitation. Treatment plants that are effective against all pollutants currently present in water would make the cost of drinking water prohibitively high for everyday consumption.

Finally, once treated, this water is transported through pipes, some of which are old, and the water can become polluted by carrying sediment or metal residues from these pipes.

The dangers of water pollution

Water is essential for life, is consumed daily and accounts for up to two-thirds of our body weight. It is found in our cells, organs and brain. The quality of this water is therefore vital to our health.

Even if this water is partially purified in treatment plants, many toxic molecules remain, either unidentified or simply untreated. Added to this are the ‘cocktail effect’ and bioaccumulation. In the first case, we do not know much, if anything, about the effects of a mixture of pollutants, even in very small doses. In the second case, small doses accumulate in the human body. At very low doses, some pollutants may not be a real cause for concern. However, many molecules are not broken down or eliminated by the body, and the accumulation eventually becomes harmful.

What pollutants are found in water?

They can be varied. In general, the most problematic pollutants are heavy metals (cadmium, mercury and lead being the most dangerous), drug residues, pesticides, VOCs (volatile organic compounds), PFAS and microplastics.

All of these have a toxic effect on the human body and must be eliminated, or greatly reduced, so that their presence in water no longer poses a problem.

How to find out about the pollution in your water

The most reliable and comprehensive solution is to use a specialised analysis laboratory. By providing them with a sample of your tap water, they will be able to map out the specific pollutants found in it. Please note: a standard analysis will only give you certain parameters of potability (pH, hardness, presence of pathogenic microorganisms). If you want to get a real picture of potential pollutants, you will need to order a detailed analysis, listing the pollutants you are looking for. This is a tedious and very expensive process.

You can also ask your water supplier to provide you with the monthly or annual reports they are required to make available to consumers. Again, these analyses are general and cover fairly large distribution points. However, in many cases, pollution is fairly localised.

There are also consumer associations that provide maps with local and accurate information. In France, the association Que Choisir has published an interactive map online with interesting analyses.

It is therefore quite difficult to get a complete and localised view of water pollution, especially since the emergence of new and untested pollutants (see our article on pesticides for more information).
