How to use your Star Water Filter® properly

Your system is installed and ready to use. Here are a few tips to help you use it effectively and get the most out of it.

Filling your Star Water Filter® water filter

Whatever model you choose, the filling routine should always be the same, bearing in mind that there is no seal between the upper and lower tanks. In all models, the upper tank is slightly smaller than the lower tank, for safety reasons, in order to prevent overflow if the lower tank is not completely empty. More details on useful volumes.

Nevertheless, if you completely fill the upper tank while there is too much water left in the lower tank, you run the risk of an overflow. This is because the position of the tap on the lower tank means that there is a certain volume of water underneath it, and because the tanks fit together, there is a 2 cm gap that cannot be filled with water.

There are two possible situations when filling your system:

Lower tank empty with residual
water below tap level

Lower tank completely empty
Mini Star Filling the upper tank
by covering the top of the filters

Filling the upper tank
completely

Big Star

Fill the upper tank so that the top of the filters
are covered by 1 cm of water

Filling the upper tank
completely

Super Star Filling the upper tank
leaving 1.5 cm without water

Filling the upper tank
completely

It is important to completely cover the filters in your top tank. Not only does this maximise the volume of water filtered, but it also ensures that the filter is evenly stressed over its entire height, which is essential if it is to function properly and prevent certain areas from drying out.

Ideally, this routine can be carried out once a day if you've bought the right model for your needs. You can consult our buying guide to help you do this.

However, this routine can be carried out several times a day if you drink more water than usual, but it should not be done less than once every two or three days so that the filtered water is not kept for too long. In fact, if your filtered water is free of pollutants, it is also free of the chlorine that preserves it. We therefore recommend that you drink it within two to three days, or sooner if the weather is very hot, for example.

Using your filtered water

Your filtered water should be used every day for drinking, but also for preparing hot drinks (tea, coffee, herbal teas, etc.) and for cooking (cooking your food). Boiling water is not enough to remove pollutants. The water can also be used to feed your pets, so that they too can enjoy pure, healthy water.

If properly maintained and cleaned, the filtered water from your Star Water Filter® system can be used to make your baby's bottles.

Storage

If your filters are not going to be used for some time, they need to be stored. Follow the recommendations below depending on how long you will be away.

  • Not in use for less than 3 days

If you're not using your filters for more than 3 days, you don't need to do anything special. Empty any remaining water from both tanks and leave your filters in place in the upper tank.

  • Not in use for more than 3 days but less than 7 days

If you are not going to use your filters for more than 3 days and up to a week, you should remove them from the top tank and place them in a well-sealed, watertight storage bag (such as a ziplock). Store them in the refrigerator. This will prevent the development of mould or algae. The tightness of the freezer bag is essential, because the activated carbon contained in your filters acts like a ‘sponge’ and can potentially absorb odours from your fridge.

Warning: your filters must never freeze, otherwise they will be unusable. Keep them in the least cold place in your fridge.

  • Not in use for more than 7 days

If you are going to be away or not using your filters for more than 7 days, you must dry them completely before storing. This is to avoid the development of mould or algae inside your damp filter. If this is the case, a few days before you leave, dismantle your filters and shake them upside down (threaded rod down) to remove as much water as possible. Then dry them upside down (threaded rod down). Depending on the temperature and humidity of the place where you dry them, this operation can take from 3 to 4 or 5 days, or even longer if the place is damp. So plan well in advance. Once perfectly dry, place your filters in a perfectly watertight storage bag and store them in a dry place away from light. Stored in this way, your filters will keep for a long time.

  • New filters

New filters, stored in their original packaging, can be kept indefinitely. Simply place them in a dry place, away from light and heat, in a room that does not have strong odours, such as a cellar or laundry room. The activated carbon contained in your filters acts like a ‘sponge’ and is capable of absorbing odours, with the risk, afterwards, of spreading this odour in the filtered water.
