There's still water in my top tank. Is this normal?
Yes, that's normal!
Your filtration system works by gravity. In other words, it's the pressure on the filter, linked to the height of the water column in the upper tank, that ‘pushes’ the water through the filter. The lower the water level in the tank, the lower the pressure, and there comes a time when it is no longer sufficient to ‘push’ the water through the filter.
What's more, the bottom of the filter is under more pressure than the top, since it is always submerged, and tends to clog up more as a result of limescale or sediment in the water.
However, this has no effect on the operation of your filter. This residual water is mixed regularly with the refill water that you bring in regularly (see this topic on the refill routine) and is filtered again during the next cycle.
As long as the residual water in your top tank does not exceed 5 cm, there's no need to worry. However, if this level tends to increase or filtration becomes very slow, you will probably need to clean your filter.
